In this activity, participants will create beaks using paper and practice using their beaks to pick up seeds.
You will need:
- 1 sheet of paper per participant
- markers or colored pencils
- tape
- optional: materials to create a bird face, i.e., feathers, small plastic lids or buttons, felt
To do:
- Place the sheet of paper in front of you so it is tall.
- Take the bottom left corner and fold it to the right side about 2 ½ inches below the right corner. You should have a diagonal fold.
- Cut the extra flap of paper off. When you unfold the diagonal, you should have a square.
- Now fold the paper again to create a new diagonal crease and unfold it.
- Tightly fold each corner into the center point.
- Now flip your new smaller square over so the folds are on the table.
- Fold each corner into the center point again.
- Fold the bottom edge up to meet the top edge. You should have a rectangle.
- Place your each thumb in one of the front pockets and each forefinger in each of the back pockets. Slowly pull the pockets open, creating triangles for each of your fingers.
- Now hold your "beak" in one hand, forefinger and middle finger on top and thumb and ring finger on bottom.
- Tape the top two sections together. Repeat with the bottom two sections.
- Open and close your beak by moving your top and bottom fingers apart and together.
- Decorate your beaks with markers or colored pencils.
