Museum's Role:
To conduct the Alice's Wonderland Family Science Night, Children's Discovery Museum has created 10 activity kits for the activities listed below. Each kit fits into a plastic bin (18" x 6" x 24") and includes all materials necessary for three hundred people to do the activity during the course of the evening event.
Two Museum staff members attend the evening event at the school, deliver the kits, train teachers/parent volunteers, and stay throughout the evening to support the event.
School's Role:
The school does all of the recruitment for the event, and provides tables and adult volunteers (either teachers or parent volunteers). Attendance at Family Science Nights has ranged from about 100 to about 400 people, with the average being about 300. Family Science Nights typically take place in the school's multi-media room or cafeteria, but Children's Discovery Museum has also conducted Family Science Nights in multiple classrooms and even outside!
Family Science Night Agenda:
- 5:00 Museum staff arrive at the school, unload materials kits, and arrange tables
- 5:30 Staff training for teachers and parent volunteers begins
- Introduction to the evening - The way things will work
- Alice in Wonderland brainstorm - What comes to mind when you think of the story?
- Try out one of the activities - "Reaching the Key" works especially well to introduce the connection to the story and the challenge of the activity. We usually ask people to work in groups.
- Tour of all of the activities - Walk the group around and introduce them to each of the activities, asking them to think about which activity they would like to facilitate.
- 6:15 Teachers/parent volunteers read activity write-ups and set up their activity stations
- 6:30 Families arrive
- Sign-in sheet completed
- Families explore different activity stations. Activities can be completed in any order.
- 7:45 Museum staff circulate to let families know that event will conclude soon.
- 8:00 Event ends, and teachers pack up the activity kits.
- 8:15 Museum staff pack up the van and leave.
