Conducting Parent-Child Workshops

Background

Children's Discovery Museum conducted Parent-Child Workshops both at the Museum and in partnership with local community-based organizations. Facilitated both in Spanish and in English, these workshops gave parents and children wonderful quality time together while also providing parents with ideas and approaches about ways to encourage their children in math and science.

The two and a half hour workshops included hands-on science and math activities, fun and active games, opportunities to reflect on hands-on activities, and a time for parents to talk about their perceptions of science and scientists. Four different workshops -- Animal Adaptations, Queen's Croquet Ground, A Mad Tea Party, and Larger and Smaller -- were created, and agendas for the workshops are included below.

Partnerships

Development of partnerships with local community-based organizations (CBO) proved to be incredibly valuable for recruitment and diversifying the audience. CBOs can often provide access to families who might not be as likely to attend a workshop at the Museum. Sacred Heart Community Service, Children's Discovery Museum's long time partner, provided recruitment support, space for the workshop, childcare for younger siblings, and translators for the workshop. Because families already had a relationship and trust with staff at Sacred Heart, they came readily to the workshop. At the end of one workshop, one of the participants (an eleven year old Latina girl) said, "I never knew that girls could be engineers, but now I want to be one!"
