Animal Feet Relay Race

In this activity, participants will learn about different types of animal feet and will put their own adaptation skills to the test when they must race using various animal feet.

Materials per team:

  • 1 pair of socks with batting in the end. (Participants wear them on their back feet and hop like a rabbit.)
  • 2 pairs of socks with batting sown in under the ball of the foot. (Participants wear them on their hands and feet and walk on all-fours like an animal with paws.)
  • 1 set of 3-foot 1' x 4' planks with two straps on each. (Two people wear this with oneplank attached to each foot so the pair walks like a caterpillar.)
  • 1 pair of quart-sized paint cans with ropes attached as handles. (Participants stand on the cans and hold the strings in each hand, walking like an animal with hooves.)

To do:

  • Introduce the various "feet" and predict what animal might have similar feet.
  • Allow each parent and child to pick a pair of feet. Let them try them on and walk around a little.
  • Divide the group into equal teams, with only one pair of feet per team. Have each team member stand in a line, one behind the other.
  • The object of the relay race is to make it around a designated dot/cone and back again. When each person has completed his/her lap, he/she must sit at the end of the line. The first team with every member sitting down, wins.
  • Encourage each person to pick another set of feet and conduct the race again.
  • After the races are finished, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the different feet. What coping mechanisms did they discover in order to move quickly with their new feet?
